PORTLAND SPOILS OPENING NIGHT IN NEW BRITAIN, 3-0!
A Power Outage Delays the Game 24 minutes after the first inning
(New Britain, CT) - There was plenty of excitement on opening night at New Britain Stadium, despite Portland's 3-0 victory over the Rock Cats. With one out in the first inning, the entire stadium lost power, causing a 24-minute delay after the final out of the first. Both team's pitchers were scoreless through seven innings until the Sea Dogs scored in the eighth and added two runs in the ninth inning. Bubba Bell knocked in the game-winner with a two-out single off Armando Gabino (losing pitcher) in the eighth inning. Sean Danielson started the rally with a double and scored Portland's first run of 2008. In the ninth inning, Zach Daeges led off with a double and scored on a two-base hit by Jay Johnson. Iggy Suarez capped off a great night with a two-out, run-scoring single. Suarez had three hits from the number nine spot. Jose Vaquedano worked one and 1/3 innings to earn the win for Portland. Beau Vaughan faced one batter and got Trevor Plouffe to pop out with two-outs to end the game. Vaughan came in after Hunter Jones walked two batters with two outs. Jones worked one and 2/3 innings, escaping a second and third, nobody out jam in the eighth inning. Justin Masterson, the number two pitching prospect in the Red Sox Organization, worked four scoreless innings in his first start of the season. Ryan Mullins hurled five blank frames fro the Rock Cats on two hits and three strikeouts. New Britain finished the game 1-for-9 with runners-in-scoring position and had a runner reach base in eight of nine innings. Notes...Portland improved to 7-8 on Opening Day...Mark Wagner threw out Felix Molina in the third inning - Wagner is rated as the Best Defensive Catcher in the Red Sox system according to Baseball America.
