The Portland Sea Dogs in conjunction
with the Maine Track Club, Paradigm Window Solutions, and Sportshoe Center
will be hosting the eighth annual Mother’s Day 5k Road Race on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11th. Proceeds
from the event will benefit Maine Breast Cancer Research. There
will also be a Kid’s Run that is free of charge.
Slugger and his Mom lead the way
on the flat 5K course which begins in front of the Portland Expo building,
travels down Congress Street, turning down Stevens Avenue, and making
a right onto Brighton Avenue back down Deering Avenue into Fitzpatrick
Stadium. The race culminates
inside Hadlock Field in front of the third base dugout.
The top overall male and female
finishers will receive a trophy, a pair of 2008 Season Tickets for the
remainder of the 2008 Sea Dogs season, and throw out the ceremonial first-pitch
prior to a future Sea Dogs game. The
top three male and female finishers in each age group will also be presented
with awards. All participants of the race will receive a complimentary
ticket to attend a future Sea Dogs game.
2008 RACE RECAP:
The Portland Sea Dogs Mother's Day 5K continues to grow by leaps and bounds, as a record field of more than 1,900 completed the eighth edition of the largest 5K race in Maine -- smashing last year's record by almost 500.
For the sixth time in seven years, Ethan Hemphill, 35, of Freeport paced the field, finishing in 15 minutes, 14 seconds. Judson Cake, 30, of Bar Harbor was close behind in 15:19, and Jonathan Wilson, 20, of Falmouth was third in 15:21.
Sheri Piers, 36, of Falmouth edged training partner Kristin Barry, 34, of Scarborough for the women's title, reversing the order of finish from the previous two years. Piers and Barry were both timed in 17:26, matching Barry's course record. Carry Buterbaugh, 36, of South Portland was third for the second year in a row with a time of 17:59
2007 RACE RECAP:
Highlighted by ideal running weather and a record field the “Seventh Annual Portland Sea Dogs Mother’s Day 5K Road Race” presented by Paradigm Windows and Sportshoe Center took place on Sunday, May 13th starting and finishing at Hadlock Field in Portland. The race is hosted by the Sea Dogs and the Maine Track Club and raises money for the Maine Cancer Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. A new record 1,650 runners registered for the race making the race the largest 5K in Maine and fifth largest 5K in New England.
Louis Luchini of Ellsworth took the top spot, while shattering the course record, finishing in just 14 minutes, 30 second. Five-time champion Ethan Hemphill of Freeport took second finishing in 15 minutes, 27 seconds while Dan Franek (15:34) of South Portland rounded out the top three.
Meanwhile in the women’s division, for the second straight year, Kristin Barry (17:35) of Scarborough and Sheri McCarthy-Pier (17:49) claimed the top two spots. Carry Buterbaugh (18:46) of South Portland finished third.

Record Attendance for the Sixth Annual Race
Benefiting Breast Cancer Research
The Sixth Annual Portland Sea Dogs Mother’s
Day 5K Road Race presented by Paradigm Windows took place on Sunday, May
14th starting and finishing at Hadlock Field in Portland. The race is hosted
by the Sea Dogs and the Maine Track Club and raises money for the Maine
Cancer Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. A record 1,175 runners registered
for the race.
For the fifth consecutive year Freeport’s Ethan Hemphill took the
top spot finishing in 15 minutes, 29 seconds. Hemphill edged Joel Anderson
(15:30) of Brunswick and Scott Lomis (15:32) of Malden, Massachusetts who
rounded out the top three.
Kristin Berry of Scarborough took the top female spot
finishing in 17:26 while Sheri Piers of Falmouth and Katie Ryan of Brookline,
Massachusetts both finished at 18:19.
